If the First Amendment means anything, it means the government doesn’t get to decide which opinions are acceptable and which ones are too “offensive” to say out loud.
That’s why a series of viral videos out of Fort Worth, Texas, has struck such a nerve. Americans watched police officers tell Christian street preachers that speech could become criminal if someone was offended by it. Not threats. Not violence. Not incitement. Simply speech that offended people.
Now the Department of Justice is stepping in.
